March Program- 10 for 10

We are starting a new segment for our meeting called “10 for 10”.  Any member can speak on a topic for ten minutes in return for a $10 Tiny Stitches gift card!

Topic #1  Binding with a Flat Felled Foot by Nikki

Only a few days before her due date Nikki amazed us by showing us how she uses a Flat Felled Foot to machine sew down binding.  She did a great job of turning the corners and joining the ends too!

Topic #2 Faux Piped Binding (2 Color Binding) by Christie

Completely done by machine!  No hand finishing required.

  • Cut fabric 1 ½ inches wide for main binding fabric.  Cut fabric 1 ¾ wide for accent fabric.  (This always seems backwards to me.  The fatter fabric ends up showing less.)
  • Sew each color of fabric strips end to end as you normally would for binding.  Make it long enough to go around the quilt. Press seams open.
  • Sew the 2 long strips together.  Try to stagger the seams between different strips.
  • Press toward the piping color (the fatter strip).  This will end up “filling” the piping. Pressing the other way would give a flatter look, if you prefer.  Press carefully, take your time. If you are not careful, the fabric gets lost in the crease and the pipe looks uneven.
  • Sew binding onto the BACK of the quilt using the ¼ inch foot.  Main binding fabric should face down, all you can see is the accent color.
  • Stop ¼ from the end and miter corners as normal.  Continue and join ends like you typically would.
  • Flip to the Front.
  • Use Edge Joining Foot to “stitch in the ditch”  between piping color and binding. Notice how the stitching will show on the back as a parallel line to the binding, about ¼ inch away.  Consider your bobbin thread color. If it matches my quilting then I don’t find this line bothersome. Depending on how the mitered corner is folded, the Edge Joining Foot may be tricky going around the corners.
  • Ta Da!

Topic #3 Quilt Blocking by Brian

Brian shared his tips on squaring up a quilt that he used when creating his Mail Chimp quilt.  Make sure to check the length of your diagonals as well as the length of the sides to make sure that your quilt doesn’t end up like the shape of Tennessee!

Topic #4 Linda’s Jelly Roll quilt

Linda showed us her technique of sewing jelly roll strips into a square and slicing it up into triangles to make this complicated looking colorful quilt.
