Block of the Month: Block One, Checkerboard block

February 11, 2018

Block 1: Checkerboard block

(Throw Version, 12.5” x 24.5” block)

Supplies:   (18) 4.5 in squares

Note:  You need 18 4.5 in squares.  You can choose how varied you want this to be.  If you are doing a 2 color block, for example, cut 9 of one color and 9 of the other.

Assembly:

Layout your squares into a rectangle that is 6 rows of 3 squares each.

Sew  6 rows of 3 blocks each in a layout you find pleasing.

Then sew the 3 block rows together.

Your end result will be a 3×6 rectangular quilt block that measures 12.5”x24.5”.

(Mini version, 6.5” x 12.5” block)

Supplies:  (18) 2.5” squares.

Assembly:

Layout your squares into a rectangle that is 6 rows of 3 squares each.

Introducing: Block of the Month 2018!

February 10, 2018

Hi, it’s Ella!  I’ve got a skill building block of the month for this year.

It’s low key.  (Think not very intimidating, scrap friendly.)  The quilt is made up of 11 sets of blocks, with the 12th month spent assembling the quilt top.

The Throw size measures 60.5”x72.5”, without borders.

The Mini/wall hanging size measures 30.5”x36.5”, without borders.

I’m not giving exact fabric requirements.  If you are doing the throw size, 4 yards of background should be more than plenty, assuming you don’t want to do borders.  I’ve designed this to be a non-threatening skill builder.  You can consider using this as a scrap clearer.  While the backgrounds may vary in block requirements, many of the blocks can use scrap pieces or pieces of FQs.

Each month, the new block will be posted on our website and on my blog (www.throwawenchintheworks.blogspot.com).  I’ll also be doing a demo of each block at the Guild meeting!
